Zika Virus

About this service

Zika virus is spread when a person is bitten by an infected mosquito. It can also spread:

  • By having sex with a person who has been infected by Zika or traveled to an area where Zika is active
  • From a pregnant woman to her unborn child
  • Through blood transfusion (likely but not confirmed)

Most people don't know if they have been infected because they don't actually feel sick. Symptoms usually start 3 to 7 days after being infected. They can last from a few days to a week. The most common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, red eyes (conjunctivitis), muscle pain, headache and vomiting.

There is no vaccine to protect against Zika. The best defense is to protect yourself and your family from getting mosquito bites. If you think you may have been exposed to Zika or if you have symptoms, we can assess you, treat your symptoms and refer you for testing, if needed.
