Hydrocortisone Cream to Relieve Itching and Irritation

Hydrocortisone cream relieves itching, swelling and irritation of the skin. If a health professional recommends this topical medication, use the CVS online store to search for the right concentration. We have several product sizes and formulations to suit your needs.

What are the Best Hydrocortisone Cream Brands?

What Is Hydrocortisone Cream Used For?

Hydrocortisone cream is a topical medication used to help relieve itching, swelling and irritation caused by allergies and skin conditions. Dermatologists may recommend it to help reduce the itching associated with eczema and psoriasis. It's sometimes used in combination with calamine lotion or allergy medications to treat poison ivy. Hydrocortisone anti-itch cream may help relieve the itching associated with insect bites.

Hydrocortisone cream may also be used for the following conditions:

  • Contact dermatitis

  • Diaper rash

  • Heat rash

Is Hydrocortisone Cream a Steroid?

Hydrocortisone belongs to a category of medications known as steroids. When you apply hydrocortisone ointment or cream to your skin, the medication reduces inflammation, which may help control itching, swelling and irritation.

How Often Can You Use Hydrocortisone Cream?

Your doctor will let you know how often to apply hydrocortisone cream, but two to three times per day is a common dosing schedule. Products containing hydrocortisone are available without a prescription, but check with your doctor before using hydrocortisone ointment or cream for more than one week. Follow your doctor's instructions closely when applying the cream or determining how often to use a hydrocortisone-based product.

Can You Use Hydrocortisone Cream on Your Face?

Check with your doctor before using hydrocortisone cream on your face. Hydrocortisone and other steroids may cause thinning of the skin, making delicate facial skin more susceptible to damage. Some dermatologists recommend hydrocortisone cream for treating acne, but your doctor may want you to try other acne treatments first.

Is Hydrocortisone Cream an FSA or HSA Item?

Anti-itch lotions, cream and ointments are eligible for reimbursement if you have a flexible spending account or health spending account. Check with your benefits administrator to find out how to submit a claim for reimbursement. If you have an FSA or HSA debit card, you may be able to use it to order hydrocortisone cream, adhesive bandages, liquid allergy medicine and other items available in the CVS online shop.
